L&D Radio in Luton News

L&D Radio has been on the airwaves for 50 years, broadcasting 24/7 to keep Luton & Dunstable Hospital patients comforted, entertained and informed.

It’s run entirely by volunteers, and now it’s looking for more.

Communication manager Barbara Gray said “Training is given because so many skills are required to run the station. These include broadcasting, technical, administration, communication, fundraising, ward visiting and many more. If you’re over 18 and would like to be part of a fun team email [email protected].”

The station — which is a registered charity — broadcasts a mix of music, entertainment, chat programmes, news and weather with an emphasis on the hospital and surrounding area.

Barbara said: “Our schedule includes request programmes and specialist shows featuring a wide range of music such as Richard Todd’s Classic Retro countdown, Mellow Moments with Andy Saunders and Gary Jackson’s My Generation.”

The team visits wards to chat to patients, incorporating their experience into the community service radio station.

VIP guests have included well-known personalities such as Chris Tarrant, Esther Rantzen, David Pleat and Marty Wilde.

National and international news is broadcast on the hour, every hour.

And when the studio isn’t manned, a computer system relays easy-listening music.
